Fission product gas is collected from oxide fuel e of a wide variety of sizes and shapes. An element is opened by drilling through a vacuum seal against the element wall, established by compressing it between exchangeable, custom designed holding blocks, one of which is faced with Neoprene. The drill rod is sealed with a triple quad-ring seal, lubricated with vacuum grease. Gas samples exhaust through a 25-micron stainless steel filter, trapping particulate matter in the cell, and are pumped into glass sample bulbs by a stainless steel Toepler pump. Analysis is by mass spectrometer. (auth)
