IMPROVED FISSION PRODUCT GAS COLLECTION EQUIPMENT

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4038887
Fission product gas is collected from oxide fuel elements of a wide variety of sizes and shapes at Hanford. An element is opened by drilling through a vacuum seal against the element wall, established by compressing it between exchangeable, custom designed holding blocks, one of which is faced with neoprene. The drill rod is sealed with a triple quad-ring seal, lubricated with vacuum grease. Gas samples exhaust through a 25 mu stainless steel filter, trapping particulate matter in the cell, and are pumped into glass sample bulbs by a stainless steel Toepler pump. Analysis is by mass spectrometry. (auth)
