UROLOGIC COMPLICATIONS IN THE TREATMENT OF CERVICAL CARCINOMA

Journal Article · · Deut. Med. Wochschr.
Injury to the urinary tract during radiotherapy of uterine cancer is discussed and clinical results are reported. The injury depends on the absorbed dose and the tolerance of the tissues, neither of which was readily estimated. Direct measurements in the bladder during radium therapy showed large individual variations. Tissue tolerance also varied widely even for the same histologic types; intestinal mucosa was more sensitive than urinary bladder epithelium. Tissue tolerance was raised by giving fractionated radiation doses. Prevention of infection also raised tissue tolerance. The dose tolerated by the urinary bladder is considered to be 6000 to 8000 r, which was higher than that tolerated by the rectum. Radiation damage to the urinary tract may not be manifested for months or years, and late effects are often not preceded by early damage, which is clinically evident. (H.H.D.)
