DETERMINATION OF THE ISOTOPIC COMPOSITION OF A $beta$-EMITTING GAS MIXTURE BY MEANS OF TWO INTERCONNECTED IONIZATION CHAMBERS (in Russian)

The usual method of determining BETA -active gases in the atmosphere by recording the decay curve of the sample is rendered difficult if the half lives of the isotopes are too close to each other. The isotopic composition of the mixture can be determined more accurately by making use of a second parameter, the limiting energy of the BETA spectrum. This may be derived from the back scattering of BETA particles; the value of the back scattering is a direct function of the order number of the reflector. Thus, if 2 interconnected ionization chambers, with walls made of different materials, are employed for the measurements, the ionization currents generated will be different. Two spherical chambers with walls made of Pb and Plexiglas were constructed for this purpose. The concentration of an isotope Q in curie/liter was calculated from the expression Q = kI where I indicates the ionization current and k the standardization coefficient, the latter being a function of the BETA spectrum.
