Austenitic alloys can be strengthened by a hightemperature thermomechanical treatment'' (HTT) which consists of the following: holding at a high-temperature to obtain a homogeneous solid solution (about 1200 deg C for most austenitic alloys and high-heat-strength alloys); cooling to 900-1100 deg C in treating a steel alloy, and to 500 to 900 deg C in strengthening nickel. plastic deformation with a reduction of about 25 to 35%; cooling to fix the specific structural state formed during the hot plastic deformation; and dispersion hardening or aging by precipitation of a carbide or intermetallic compound. The control samples were cooled directly from 1200 deg C by plunging in water. Microstructural photographs of technical-grade nickel subjected to high-temperature (900 deg C) hot rolling at 6.7 m/min show that the grain boundaries are more saw-toothed'' as compared to the control samples. The structure of the treated sample hinders the propagation of cracks. In testing the long-term strength of the nickel samples, a stress sigma = 31.2 kg/mm/sup 2/ was used at400 deg C, and sigma = 10 kg/mm/sup 2/ was used at 600 deg C. The time for failure of the treated sample as compared to the control sample was greater by a factor of 118 at 600 deg C, 19 at 700 deg C, 18 at 800 deg C, and 12 at 900 deg C. A 43 to 63% increase in yield strength is observed with a thermal treatment of the sample at 600 deg C. As compared to the controls, the treated nickel samples showed an increase in the yield point of 134 to 203% at 400 deg C, and of 195 to 256% at 600 deg hot rolling. The thermal treatment increases the strength of the nickel and improves its plastic properties. (TTT).
