Exchange Adsorption of Radioactive Ion by Packed Column of Kaoline Tablets Treated with Sodium Hydroxide (in Japanese)
Natural kaoline has relatively low cation exchange capacity, but the capacity can be increased remarkably by treatment with sodium hydroxide solution. Clays are dispersed in water as very small particles, so it is too difficult to separate them from the water. A kaoline tablet was prepared to prevent dispersion by binding with cellulose. Strontiumm was used as an adsorbate in packed column operation, because it was found that the kaoline had a higher selectivity for strontium than cesium. In a low flow rate, a capacity of 100 to 200 meq/l00g was obtained for strontium. Cellulose did not affect the adsorption characteristics of strontium; however, the kaolinite tablet was swelled and deformed under the condition of a strong irradiation or acidity.
