In order to use montmorillonite for ion exchange decontamination of radioactive cesium ion, the undesirable swelling characteristic of montmorillonite was improved by calcination above 700 deg C. The cation exchange capacity of the calcined exchanger was improved by treatment with sodium hydroxide, which was found to be more suitable than hydrochloric acid. The total exchange capacity of the new exchanger was measured in normal solution of cesium labeled with Cs/sup 137/. Exchange equilibria of Natural-, H-, and Na-form calcined exchangers are discussed taking calcination temperature and the kinds of chemicals into consideration. (P.C.H.)
