PROGRESS REPORT ON NUCLEAR PHYSICS FOR OCTOBER-DECEMBER 1961 TO THE UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4767187
The measurements of the mass distribution of fission fragrnents from thermal neutron fission of U/sup 235/, U/sup 233/, and Pu/sup 239/ were completed. A paper is being prepared on the rotational motions in ammonium salts. Work associated with charged particle investigations is reported. Information is included on installation of a new Van de Graaff terminal, N/sup 15/ reactions with He ions, (p, gamma ) experiments, energy variation of the cyclotron, and coulomb excitation research. Light particle investigations were conducted on energy dependent beta-- gamma angular correlation in Rb/sup 86/ and Rb/sup 84/, search for two quanta emission frorn 1.73-Mev 0+ level of Zr/sup 90/, and fast lifetime measurements. Work on instrument development is reported. A transistorized single-channel pulse-height analyzer for 0.1 mu sec double delay line clipped pulses was designed. A linear gating circuit was built for the (p, gamma ) inverse resonance experiments using the 36-in. cyclotron. The analyzer magnet current regulator designed for the model CN nanosecond pulsing unit in the Van de Graaff generator was installed. The firing control system of the Nevis synchrocyclotron was completed and installed. A precision delay generator was designed for the Nevis synchrocyclotron neutron velocity selector system, and a unit was constructed to permit adjustment of the phase relations in a rotary slit system of this machine.
