SWITCHING A 384-KILOJOULE, LOW-INDUCTANCE CAPACITOR BANK

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4766841

Modifications on the spark gaps and trigger circuit of a 384-kilojoule capacitor bank are described which reduce the jitter time from about 1 mu sec to less than 25 m mu sec. The design retains the use of three electrode spark gaps that can handle high energy (96 kj) and charge (3 coulombs). The operating range is from 30 to 60 kv, and the total bank inductance is 20 m mu h. During initial tests 1000 firings produced no significant wear or variation of the electrical characteristics.
