MODIFICATIONS IN ROOTS OF ZEA MAYS SEEDLINGS INDUCED BY X-IRRADIATION OF DRY SEED
Exposure of dry Zea mays seeds to x rays produced modifications in the roots of growing seedlings examined at three days of growth. X irradiation of seed inhibited cell division in the root tips of growing seedlings but apparently had no effect on cell exparnsion. Therefore, seedling growth from x irradiated seed is due primarily to expansion of cells pre-existing in the embryo. Roots grown from xirradiated seed were thicker and had more cells per cross section than roots from unirradiated seed. On the average, x irradiation had little effect on the cell cross section. Roots grown from x-irradiated seed had fewer cells in the root apex, whereas the cell length was doubled. (auth)
