Radioactive Ca/sub 3/(PO/sub 4/)/sub 2/. H/sub 2/O samples of catalysts containing Ca/sup 45/ (E/sub mas/ = 0.255 Mev) and P/sup 32/ (E/sup max/ = 1.707 Me v) were prepared. At a specific activity of 6.2 mC of Ca/sup 45/ per gram of catalyst, the conversion of isopropyl alcohol to isopropylene was a little less than the conversion obtained with a non-radioactive catalyst. The conversion increased at a specific activity of 14.6 mC/g, and was a factor of 5 greater with a specific activity of 58.1 mC/g, as compared to the non-radioactive catalyst. The behavior of the catalyst containing P/sup 32/ was analogous to that of the catalyst containing Ca/sup 45/. With a specific activity of 52.2 mC of P/sup 32/ per gram of catalyst, an eight-fold increase in catalytic activity was observed as compared to the non-radioactive catalyst. On aging the catalyst for 50 days before use, the catalytic activity fell off somewhat. The surface area of the radioactive samples, as measured by krypton absorption, was not changed by addition of radioactivity to the catalyst. The apparent activation energy for the deyhdration reaction is 17.8 kcal/mol with a non-radioactive catalyst. The apparent activation energy is 11.9 kcal/mol at 58.1 mC of Ca/sup 45/ per gram of catalyst, and 7.3 kcal/mol at 52.2 mC of P/sup 32/ per gram of catalyst. (TTT)
