A method was developed for investigating stable, nonlinear, nonattenuating, periodic, small-amplitude plasma motions. The method was used for determining the stability of nonlinear longitudinal electron and ion plasma oscillations. The instability resembled quasiparticle decay. The criterion for instability was found, and it was shown that ion oscillations are stable in relation to arbitrary longitudinal oscillation excitation, while electron longitudinal oscillations are unstable in relation to simultaneously excited longitudinal ion and electron oscillations (of a different frequency). An additional instability of longitudinal electro waves was observed in a plasma in a magnetic field. The latter are unstable in relation to the excitation of two transverse electromagnetic waves (with a certain relation between magnetic field and plasma parameters). The increments of certain types of instabilities were evaluated. (R.V.J.)
