RADIATION DOSIMETER MADE OF HETEROGENEOUS GLASS

A radiation dosimeter for measuring neutron fluxes is described. It consists of a single lamella of heterogeneous glass. One of the two opposite surraces of this lamella is treated chemically in order to change the composition of the glass to a certain depth. With this chemical treatment the concentration of a neutron-absorbing element is changed. For example, a borosilicate glass can be used from which the boron is removed by treating it with sulfuric acid. If after this treatment the lamella is exposed to a flux of slow neutrons the volume of that part of the lamella from which no boron had been removed changes more than the other. As a result of the exposure the lamella bends and the curvature can be measured. Special details of construction are described. (H.K.)
