Cs-137 EXCRETION AND BODY BURDENS IN ALASKAN ESKIMOS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4764314

The Cs/sup 137/ body burdens of 700 Eskimos in northern Alaska were measured using a transportable whole-body counter. Urine samples excreted during a 24-hr period were collected from 15 Eskimos. Data are tabulated. The body burdens of Cs/sup 137/ in these Eskimos were much higher than the average body burden in the rest of the U. S. The high body burdens of Cs/sup 137/ were attributed to the high levels of Cs/sup 137/ in reindeer and caribou that comprise a large part of the diet. The source of the Cs/sup 137/ was attributed to fallout on lichens eaten by the reindeer and caribou. The retention capacity of lichens for failout radionuclides is nearly l00%. (C.H.)
