A shadow shield whole-body counter was calibrated for Zn/sup 65/ and Cs/ sup 137/. It was used to count over 700 people, mostly Eskimos, in several villages north of the Arctic Circle in Alaska during the summer of 1962. Body burdens of Cs/sup 137/ up to more thand 100 times the average in the rest of the United States were found. The urinary excretion rate for Cs/sup 137/ was determined to be 0.6% of the body burden per day, or 0.22%/g of K excreted in urine. The high levels of Cs/sup 137/ were linked to a diet containing reindeer and caribou meat resulting from high levels of accumulation in lichens. Procedures and results are reported for the in vivo determination of P/sup 32/ in the human body and measurements of neutron-induced Na /sup 24/, and K/sup 42/, Au/ sup 198/, and P/sup 32/ in perso ns exposed in the Recuplex accident. The calibration of a variety of radiation detectors is described. The half life of Sb/sup 124/ was found to be 60.20 plus or minus 0.01 days. (C.H.)
