Acute effects of whole-body x irradiation on total lifetime fertility and total life-time number of progeny in mice were studied. Pronounced sex differences were noted in the response to radiation. Acute irradiations of from 0 to 320 r scarcely affected male fertility or litier size, while in irradiated females the number of litters and number of progenies decreased regularly beginning at doses of 20 r. Irradiation to either parent had no influence on the sex ratios of progeny. Chronic effects of whole-body irradiation on progenies and sex ratios of first litters were measured for each of 10 continuing generations following exposure of the first generation and exposure of all generations to 22 hrs/day continuous gamma irradiation of from 1.3 to 2.6 r/day. No effects on reproduction were observed from this low-level exposure. Topics discussed include the specific effects of high-dose acute irradiation on reproductivity, the effects of x radiation on postnatal growth of mice, the effects of irradiation in utero on sterility and life span of progenies, effects of irradiation on life span and senescence, and the induction of specific gene mutations by irradiation. Data are tabulated from a survey of genetic factors influencing disease processes in mammals. Data are included on modifications in genetic effects induced by irradiation. (C.H.)
