DEVELOPMENT OF 2400 F FORGING DIE SYSTEM. Interim Technical Progress Report, June 28, 1962-September 27, 1962

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4764072
A program to improve fabrication processes for aircraft and missile components is reported. The ultimate objective of the research is development of forging processes for refractory metals with dies operating at about 2400 deg F. During the report period, research directed toward reducing the number of die sequences conventionally required to produce a selected forging was completed. It was demonstrated that this forging can be produced directly from hot-rolled bar stock. Candidate die materials including TiB/sub 2/, SiC, and Refrax were evaiuated for operation at 2400 deg F. These materials withstood upsetting loads encountered in room-temperature press-forging of mild steel blanks which simulates pressures required for refractory metals at 3000 F. (J.R.D.)
