The upper operating temperature limit of Inconel 713C forging dies was determined by progressively increasing the load and temperature conditions. Ultimate failure occurred by gross cracking at 1900 deg F under a 1000-ton load while forging steel. During the research to reduce the requisite number of die sequences by an extrusion-forging technique, the die was destroyed. The die design was modified and rebuilding is under way. Prototype construction of a 2400 deg F system has begun, with the ultimate decision concerning die material still pending. (auth)
