THE STRUCTURE OF EXTENSIVE COSMIC-RAY AIR SHOWERS NEAR THE SHOWER AXIS

Journal Article · · J. Phys. Soc. Japan
OSTI ID:4763840
Cosmic-ray air showers containing from 10/sup 4/ to 10/sup 5/ particles were detected by an array of 19 closely packed, circular scintillation counters at 100 m above sea level. In analysis of the data, the structure function was assumed to be of the form f(r) = Kr/sup -n/. It was estimated that the mean value of n increased from 0.7 at 8 < r < 100 cm to 1.0 at 100 < r < 200 cm and 1.2 at 200 < r < 300 cm. For showers whose axes crossed the array n ranged from 0.4 to 1.8 with the most probable value being 0.75. (A.G.W.)
