The marked deuterization of the reaction products resulting from the interaction of D atoms with various organic compounds is due to the isotopic exchange of the newly formed free radicals with D atoms. V. V. Voevodskii et al. (Doklady Akad Nauk, 81: 215(1951)) assumed that D/sub 2/ molecules also participate in the reaction. Tests were carried out to prove this assumption, adding an ethylene and deuterium mixture to a stream of partially dissociated protium, expecting on the basis of the known reaction rate constants that the protium atoms form radicals according to H + C/sub 2/H/sub 4/ yields C/sub z/H/ sub 5/ while no D atoms are formed by the H + D/sub 2/ yields HD + D reaction. The reaction of the partially dissociated protium H + H/sub 2/ with olefins in the presence of molecular D/sub 2/ yielded markedly deuterated products, indicating that molecular D/sub 2/ participates in the exchange reaction. However, in similar experiments carried out in the absence of D atoms, such as the photolysis of acetone in the presence of molecular D/sub 2/, no such deuterated products could be discovered. As an explanation, it is postulated that interaction with the glass or quarts walls accelerates catalytically the formation of D atoms. (TTT)
