SEPARATION OF RARE EARTHS BY COLUMN CHROMATOGRAPHY WITH CELLULOSE POWDER TREATED WITH DI(2-ETHYLHEXYL)ORTHOPHOSPHORIC ACID. PART 2

The separation of the following lanthanide pairs was obtained by using beds of cellulose powder treated with di(2ethylhexyl)orthophosphoric acid and HCl as the eluent: La--Ce (2.35); Nd--Pm (2.10); Eu--Gd (1.65); Gd--Tb (3.85) and Tm-- Yb (3.33). The value of the separation factor is given in parentheses. Even though such values are quite different from each other, the value of the average separation factor of two adjacent lanthanides is 2.62 and is in good agreement with that given for liquid-liquid extractlon (2.50). Moreover, the following separations are described: Cs --Sr --La--Ce --Nd --Gd--Tb--Tm; Cs--Sr--Y (tracer level) and La--Ce--Nd--Eu (carrier level). The effect of temperature on column efficiency was also studied by considering the separation of Eu --Gd. An increase of operating temperature is very favorable to the resolution of peaks because the kinetic process is appreciably improved even though a slight decrease of the separation factor verifies due to distribution equilibrium reasons. The increase of column efficiency is put into evidence by the related increase of the number of theoretical plates for the given length of the column. (auth)
