ELECTROSTATIC CLASSIFICATION OF SUBMICRON AIRBORNE PARTICLES. Progress Report, June 1 to August 1, 1962

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4762486
Progress is reported in a study of electrostatic classification of submicron airborne particles, with emphasis on particles smaller than 0.1 micron. Modifications in design of a gas ionizer and an electrostatic classifier are discussed and illustrated by schematic sketches. Initial tests using the classifier were made with atmospheric dust. Results are discussed and proposals are included for equipment modification. A classifier was designed and tested that employs a nonuniform electric field for particle size classification. Analysis was begun of the interaction of the fluid flow field and the electrostatic field. The influence of Brownian movement, optimum aerosol inlet position, and trajectory of charged particles on results are discussed. (C.H.)
