SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF CERIUM(III) AND SOME RARE EARTHS WITH XYLENOL ORANGE

Journal Article · · Bull. Chem. Soc. Japan
DOI:https://doi.org/10.1246/bcsj.35.1683· OSTI ID:4762164
A method is described for the spectrophotometric determin%tion of 20 to 100 mu g of a rare earth element using xylenol orange. The complexes of Ce(III), La(III), Nd(III), and Y(III) with xylenol orange have an absorption maximum at 575 to 578 m mu vs the reagent blank. Each of them is a 1: 1 complex and has a formation constant of approximately 10/sup 5/ under the conditions studied. Anions such as NTA and EDTA inhibit the color development of the complexes.
