REPORT OF OBSERVATIONS ON METABOLISM AND NUTRITION: SUBTASK, RADIATION AND STERILIZATION OF FOODS FOR WISCONSIN ALUMNI RESEARCH FOUNDATION, MADISON, WISCONSIN

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4761775
Histologic review was made of 99 Sprague-Dawley rats. on long term feeding of potatoes irradiated at 7500-8500 and 15000 to 17000 rad. Statistical evaluation of the observations is reported. Material was received from the higher level (referred to as 2X) as well as from control animals (referred to as OX). No material from the low level of irradiation was received. The only significant findings, other than sex differences, pertained to the predominance of 2X animals with congestion or edema of the spleen and minor lesions of an occasional granuloma, hemosiderosis or hyperplasia in the mesenteric lymph nodes. Lesions in the liver were associated with 2X females as compared to OX females; there were minor changes of mild to moderate degrees of fatty metamorphosis, hydropic changes, slight mononuclear infiltrates, congestion, edema or hematopoiesis. The outstanding feature was the relative absence of pneumonic processes and of arteritis. It was concluded that the ingestion of irradiated potatoes by rats, under the conditions described, produced little data suggesting that irradiated potatoes were of etiologic significance. (auth)
