The half life of radiocarbon is determined with high accuracy. A proportional counter having an inner diameter of 66 mm is used. It is equipped with a screw, making it possible to move one end, thus allowing the counter to have any sensitive length between 12 and 25 cm, so that end effects can be eiiminated. The active sample is CO/sub 2/ liberated from BaCO/sup 3/ by thermal action. The sample is carefully diluted 10/sup 9/ times with pure, inactive CO/ sub 2/, and the diluted gas used as counting gas. In one case acetylene is used as counting gas. The wall effect is eliminated by using 2 to 4 atmospheres pressure. Special precautions must be taken to eliminate adsorption errors. The value 5680 plus or minus 40 years must be for the half life of C/sup 14/, where the indicated uncertainty denotes an estimated probable error of the result. (auth)
