SOURCES OF INSTABILITY OF THE WORK OF G-M END WINDOW COUNTERS (in Polish)

Journal Article · · Nuklconika

Instabilities in G-M counters of type BAT 1, BAT 2, and BAT 3/25 and 36 were considered. The precautions are listed by type of counter. The greatest precaution must be taken with gas-quenching courters containing an organic gas. After about 10/sup 7/ total counts some of these counters may readily become photo-sensitive, therefore, the plateau is no longer flat and abnormally high count rates may occur. The precautions listed include break-in of the counter, initial testing and subsequent testing, avoiding high voltages by remeasuring the plateau, testing for small pulse heights, testing for abnormal pulse shapes, testing for imput capacitance, tests at high count rates, and background count tests. A table of 15 symptoms is given, along with several possible sources of trouble for each, and one or more precautions when applicable. (TTT)
