VELOCITY OF SOUND IN LIQUID HELIUM AT LOW TEMPERATURES
Journal Article

· Phys. Rev. Letters
The velocity of ordinary sound in liquid helium was measured at a frequency of 1 Mc/sec between 0.1 deg K and 1.7 deg K. The observed change in velocity between the lowest temperatures and 1.6 deg K is 3.86 plus or minus 0.1 m/sec, and the value for the velocity extrapolated to absolute zero is 238.27 plus or minus 0.1 m/sec. The most significant result is the discovery of a definite maximum in the velocity at 0.68 deg K. The calculated and experimental curves of the sound velocity have roughly the same characteristics, but theory does not account for the results quantitatively. Some of the possible reasons for this discrepancy are briefly discussed. (H.D.R.)
