IMPROVEMENTS IN RADIOACTIVE REFRACTORY PARTICLES

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4758605
A method is given for making small refractory particles in which radioactive ions are dispersed and firmly fixed to resist removal at temperatures up to 1000 deg C. In the method, a batch of inorganic oxides is me1ted at 1100 to 1500 deg C, quenched in water to form glass frit particles, and formed into spheres. The spheres are placed in an acid solution to leach the acid-soluble, nonrefractory constituents therefrom, then placed in solutions of radioactive ions to absorb these ions within the leached pores, and dried and raised to 1000 to 1200 deg C to devitrify the matrix. The particles are treated briefly with acid solution to remove ions from the outer surfaces and dried for use. Several examples of the preparation and properties of such particles are given. (D.L.C.)
