Contribution to the Study of the Retention of Sr-90 by Soil; CONTRIBUTION A L'ETUDE DE LA RETENTION DU Sr$sup 90$ DANS LE SOL

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4758408
Experiments on the retention of Sr by three soil type are discussed. For each of these soils we chose two horizons for each of which we determined the degree of humus, clay, and calcium. A granulometric analysis of these substrata was carried out. In a first series of experiments the soils were introduced into percolation columns and saturated by Sr/sup 85/ and Sr/sup 80/ labelled stable Sr. A BaCl/sub 2/ solution was then percolated in order to flush the Sr retained by capillarity and to determine the exchangeable fraction of strontium. The results show that the exchange proceeds quickly and thnt the absorption is mostly influenced by clay and humus. In a second series, three surface horizons were shaken in the presence of carrier-iree Sr/sup 90/. According to the results the examined horizons display no differences in absorption speed or in quantity of retained Sr/sup 90/. In the conditions of our experiments the retnined Sr/sup 90/ quantities scatter from 89.3% to 97.8% according to the horizon and the shaking period. (auth)
