The residence time of Sr/sup 90/ in the stratosphere is calculated from data obtained at Jassy, Rumania. Because the quantity and frequency of precipitation varies each month, the monthly mean values of the Sr/sup 90/ concentrations fluctuate strongly. Thus, two-month mean values are used in the calculations of the Sr/sup 90/ concentrations in rain water. The concentration of Sr/sup 90/ in the rain water is determined using published curves (Hunter and Ballou, Nucleonics 9: C-2 (1951)), assuming that all the activity is a result of a single massive injection of radioactivity into the stratosphere sometime about autumn, 1958. Using an exponential relation for the temporal variation of the activity, it is calculated that the half life of Sr/sup 90/ is 0.44 plus or minus 0.06 yr and the retention time in the stratosphere is 0.7 plus or minus 0.11 yr.
