HALF-LETHAL AND LETHAL DOSES OF Co$sup 60$ GAMMA RADIATION IN WISTAR RATS
Wistar rats were submitted to single doses of 400, 500, a dose rate of 73.4 r/hr and at a distance of 162 cm. The first symptoms of radiation were diarrhea, bleeding from the snout, later fading of the eye color, and progressive general weakness, The most frequent causes of death were internal hemorrhage, extensive pulmonary inflammation, and severe disorders of the gastrointestinal tract (perforation of the stomach and intestine, peritonitis, and strangulation of the bowel by obstruction). The changes seen after Co/sup 60/ gamma irradiation were in close agreement with those arising from x irradiation. For each group the curve of survival was plotted and from the data the lethal dose levels calculated were: LD/sub 50/30/ = 706 r, with confidence limits 650 and 787 r, and LD/sub 100/30/ = 1070 r, with limits 910 and 1280 r. Under some conditions, irradiation with an LD/sub 100/ dose lasted over 15 hr. (P.C.R.)
