ON THE RECOVERY FROM MITOTIC INHIBITION DUE TO IRRADIATION. EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON REGENERATING LIVER IN RATS (in Italian)

Journal Article · · Radiologia Medica (Italy)
OSTI ID:4757743
It was observed that localized irradiation of the regenerating liver in rats, 2000 r, immediately before partial hepatectomy, inhibits karyokinesis of the parenchymal cells for the next 48 hours. By provoking regeneration at various intervals (up to 256 days) after irradiation, it was demonstrated that the mitotic inhibition persists for a long time. Nevertheless, the mitotic block gradually tends to lessen as the interval between irradiation and hepatectomy increases. This effect can be considered the expression of damage to the hepatocyte, probably involving its nucleus. It has a particular latency which is interrupted only when the cell is stimulated to divide. Moreover, it is reversible in character, and its behavior appears to be linked to the phenomenon of cell recovery. (auth)
