A mixture of Di-tryptophan- BETA -C14 and DL-tryptophan- BETA H3 was fed to barley seedlings and resulted in the formation of radioactive gramine, which was labeled solely on the methylene group of the side chain with C14 and tritium. The ratio of C14 to tritium in the gramine was the same as in the administered tryptophans. The result strongly suggests that the methylene group of the tryptophan side chain maintains its integrity during the conversion of tryptophan to gramine.
