Radiation effects on the coefficients of linear expansion of NaCl, KCl, and KBr are discussed. Changes in the coefficients of linear expansion of the crystals irradiated at room temperature were studied over the temperature range 100 to 500 deg C. It was found that the coefficients of linear expansion increased when measured immediately after irradiation, and the increase was more noticeable at the higher temperatures. The coefficient of linear expansion of the irradiated crystals decreased with increasing duration of annealing, and after 8 hr equaled the initial value corresponding to a nonirradiated crystal. On further annealing the coefficient continued to decrease and reached a constant value after 28 hr. It was concluded that the decrease in the coefficient of linear expansion with time after irradiation can be explained by a change in the density of defects, and in particular a change in the density of dislocations.
