Electron spin resonance measurements on irradiated cycloheptatriene were made to obtain information on the cycloheptatrienyl radical formed. The spectrum of equally spaced eight lines was attributed to the hyperfine interaction of the seven equivalent protons, and it was concluded that the unpaired electron density on each carbon atom was one-seventy of an odd electron. It was concluded that cycloheptatrienyl radical may have a symmetric conjugated plane frame that is, the greatly increased resonance energy in the new frame is sufficiently large to overcome the strain required to flatten the ring. Q was found to be -27 G. It was also found that cycloheptatriene has the excited state with a definite lifetime, which is capable of the isomerization or collisional deactivation. (P.C.H.)
