Although signal gains of up to 225 were obtained for gaseous scintillation pulses by application of an electric field as in proportional counter operation, the attainable signal level and corresponding energy resolution were inferior to that achieved by standard crystal scintillators or proportional counters. The method might have some applicition in analysis of low energy x rays, if the collection and detection of light could be improved. (auth)
