PERTURBATIONS OF THE EQUIPARTITION STATE IN HYDROMAGNETICS: THE TENSOR VIRIAL APPROXIMATION

The general problem of perturbations of the equipartition state is discussed, using the tensor virial approximation. The non-static equilibrium state leads to two additional terms in the characteristic value equation, one expressed by means of a vector field whose field lines move with the unperturbed fluid. The characteristic value problem is solved for the toroidal equilibrium state. It is found that the degeneracy of the Kelvin modes is lifted by the field; the Kelvin frequencies are corrected by terms linear in the field strengths, with equally spaced levels for small fields.
