The characteristic value problem posed by axisymmetric perturbations of the toroidal equipartition state is attacked by expanding the characteristic function in two sets of orthogonal functions. The secular matrix so derived is symmetric, with even and odd terms separated. The case where the hydromagnetic energy is much less than the gravitational energy is considered separately. It is found that there are two sets of characteristic modes. One is associated with the ordinary hydrodynamic Kelvin modes and has frequencies which are the Kelvin frequencies increased by a term quadratic in the field strengths. The other is a set of pure hydromagnetic modes, with frequencies linear in the field strengths. The latter provides for frequencies much smaller than the Kelvin frequencies for large values of the fields. The work applies to a fluid sphere in magnetic fields, as in magnetic variable stars.
