THE LIMITING CURRENT PHENOMENON IN THE PRESENCE OF AN AZIMUTHAL MAGNETIC FIELD

Calculations are made that refer to the effect of an azimuthal magnetic field on the limiting current in the lowpressure mercury arc. Measurements of the limiting current are made using two discharge tubes, one of which contains a wire situated at the axis so that an azimuthal magnetic field can be applied. The observed effect of the magnetic field is in agreement with the theory. The actual value of the limiting current lies below the theoretical value in the case of the tube with the central wire, and a possible mechanism is suggested for this discrepancy. (auth)
