A METHOD OF PRODUCING A LAYER OF ZnS SCINTILLATOR FOR AN ALPHA PARTICLE DETECTOR (in Polish)

Of the numerous methods of applying a very thin layer of ZnS panticles to the face of a photomultiplier tube, the method that provides the most uniform layer is that of sedimentation. The resulting layer is very subject to shock that disturbs the uniform layer. The sedimentation layer was deposited on a sheet of plexiglas (methyl polymethacrylan), After drying, the ZnS(Ag) and plexiglas were exposed to chloroform vapor that softened the plexiglas, resulting in the ZnS becoming embedded in and permanently bonded to the plexiglas. No layer of the plexiglas covers the upper surface of the ZnS, so that the full energy of the alpha particle can be absorbed in this scintillator. Uniform layers of varying thickness (2 to 20 mg/cm/sup 2/) were produced. Many forms of ZnS particles (powder) were tried, and in increments of thickness of 1 mg/cm/sup 2/. One powder gave a count-rate saturation for 4 mg/cm/sup 2/ of ZrS and would therefore give the smallest gamma-ray background. A thin sample of natural uranium (28,800 decays/min) was used as an alpha test source. (TTT)
