LOW-LEVEL GAMMA IRRADIATION AND AUDIOGENIC SEIZURES

Audiogenic seizures were tested in mice which had received 10 r of whole- body gamma -irradiation on day 6, 11, or 16 afier birth. The latency of first and of fatal seizures, the severity of seizures, and the incidence of fatalities were no different in the irradiated animals than in a comparable control group. The present study was similar to a previously reported one in which sensitivity of audiogenic seizures to low doses of radiation was reported. Although several possible bases for the discrepancy of the findings were discussed, none seemed very obvious. It was, therefore, concluded that the generality of the previously reported findings is probably limited. (auth)
