ANGULAR CORRELATIONS FOR THE C$sup 13$(He$sup 3$,/cap alpha/$gamma$)C$sup 12$ REACTION

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics (Netherlands) Divided into Nucl. Phys. A and Nucl. Phys. B
The angnlar correlations between the first-excited-state alpha particles from the C/sup 13/(He/sup 3/, alpha )C/sup 12/ reaction and the subsequent 4.43- Mev gamma rays are studied as functions of the angle of emission of the gamma rays, for alpha particles emitted at laboratory angles of 10, 25, 40, 90, and 128 deg at a bombarding energy of 4.50 Mev. The correlation functions are fitted with an expression of the form W( theta /sub gamma /) = 1 + b/sub 2/ cos 2( theta sub gamma /-- theta /sub 2/) + b/sub 4/ cos 4( theta /sub gamma / -- theta /sub 4/). Th e cos 4 theta term dominates the correlation function at low angles and the theta /sub 4/ phase angle remains constant, while the theta /sub 2/ phase angle behaves similar to the recoil axis at low angles. The behavior of the cos 4 theta term is inconsistent with a pickup model for the reaction. Other possible direct-exchange interaction models are discussed. (auth)
