Photometric Observations from the Southern Hemisphere of 5577A Emission from the Aurora on October 28, 1961
On the night of October 28, 1961, a bright aurora was observed at Lauder, New Zealand, 170 deg E, 45 deg S geographic, 50 deg S geomagnetic. This aurora, which consisted of an active rayed arc, was observed with a photometer specifically designed to look for rapid variations in afterglow and was photographed with an all-sky camera run in conjunction with the photometer. A photometer trace for the period of 1135 to 1235 U. T. of 5577A emission and a photograph taken during the same period are presented. Comparison with fluctuations in 5577A airglow emission intensity at Sacramento Peak, geomagnetic latitude 41.6 deg N, at the same time indicates considerable auroral activity in both hemispheres.
