The free air chamber, designed and constructed in the Laboratory of Physics of the Istituto Superiore di Sanita, is described. The requirements for the correct behavior of the instrument are discussed and an analysis of the correction factors for approximations involved in the practical construction of the instrument is presented. The first experimental results obtained are also reported. (auth)
