TECHNICAL PROGRESS REPORT NO. 2189 AND NO. 2190 ON MOLTEN SALTS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4753986
The conductance of AgNO/sub 3/ and TlNO/sub 3/ was determined in conventional semi-capillary cells and in cells with medium pyrex fritted discs over the temperature range 214 to 318 deg C. The conventional speciftc conductances agreed reasonably well with previous results. For TlNO/sub 3/ the temperature range was extended to 318 deg from 250 deg . The specific conductance through fritted discs below 280 deg was the same as the conventionally determined one for AgNO/sub 3/ and about 5 to 8% lower than the convertionally determined one for TlNO/sub 3/. Above 280 deg there was an increase in the apparent specific conductance (about 25%) for both salts, This was tentatively attributed to a change in the cell constant, through a decrease in the electricaI resistance of the glass. The viscosities of AgNO/sub 3/ and TlNO/sub 3/ were determined in Ostwald viscosimeters over the same temperature range as the conductivities, The absolute values of the viscosity of AgNO/sub 3/ differed from the literature values by 5 to 10%; the range of the TlNO/sub 3/ viscosity determinations was extended from 250 to 318 deg C. The apparent activation energies'' for the conductance were constant for both salts over the whole temperature range and equal to 3.0 kcal, while the apparent activation energies for the viscosity varied from 4.1 at 220 deg C to 2.4 kcal at 300 deg C for AgNO/sub 3/ and from 3.8 at 220 deg C a 2.8 at 300 deg C for TlNO/sub 3/.
