ELECTRIAL CONDUCTIVITY AND VISCOSITY IN FUSED SALT CELLS USING POROUS DISCS. Technical Progress Report. Report 1938-1

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4121199
The conductances of AgNO/sub 3/ and TINO/sub 3/ were measured in conventional semicapillary cells and in cells with porous Pyrex fritted disks at 213 to 318 deg C. The frequency dependences were found to be different for the two types of cells. Below 280 deg C, the AgNO/sub 3/ conductivity with the fritted disks is the same as that without disks, while that of TONO/sub 3/ is 5 to 8% less. Above 280 deg C, the conductivity increases for both AgNO/sub 3/ and TINO/sub 3/ with fritted disks, and the cations are passed into the glass; this is interpreted to be due to ion exchange of the salt with the glass under the influence of the electric field. The viscosities of AgNO/sub 3/ and TINO/sub 3/ were also measured in Ostwald-type viscosimeters with and without Purex fritted disks; the results were identical. The effects of pressure and quartz fritted disks were also studied briefly. (D.L.C.)
