Experiments currently under way on mutants in wheat indicated that ethylenimine possesses a stronger mutagenic effect than gamma -ridiation; this study was extended to the tomato in order to compare the effect of these factors in another culture. Seeds of Snigirevskii-22 type tomato were exposed to 20, 30 and 40 Kr of gamma -radiation and were treated with 0.01, 0.02, 0.03 and 0.04% ethylenimine solutions. Subsequent hot-house cultivation of the seeds indicated that the 40-kr dose has lethal effect while the 20-kr dose stimulates the growth; treatment with 0.04% ethylenimine solution reduced the survival rate by 32.5%. Most of the changes observed were hereditary. The gamma -radiation induced 155, the chemical treatment 70 mutants several of which may find agricultura; application. (TTT)
