Gamma and fast-neutron irradiation of potato seeds increased viability, and ethylenimine decreased it 10% in comparison with controls. Germination was also increased by gamma irradiation but decreased by fast neutrons and ethylenimine. In the gamma irradiation, germination was maximum 6 days earlier, and with fast-neutron irradiation 4 days later than in the controls. Germination of all treated seeds was 7--12% lower than in the controls. In seedlings with three to five leaflets, after mutagen treatment thenumber of morphologically changed seedlings was high. In the middle of the vegetative period the number of seedlings with changed leaves and without a central growth point increased in the group irradiated with ionizing radiation. After gamma and fast-neutron irradiation, about one percent mutation was seen, with changes in the color, shape of the lobules, and pigmentation of the stem. The heights of the seedlings, weights of the tubers, and weights of the green mass of the plants varied considerably more in the mutagen-treated series than in the controls. The mutagentreated seeds showed a significantly high percentage of mitoses with chromosome rearrangements. The gamma radiation dose was 15 kr, and the fast- neutron dose was 1000 rad; the ethylenimine was used in 0.1 percent aqueous solution. (TTT)
