MECHANISM OF THE STIMULATING AND DEPRESSING ACTION OF RADIATION IN POTATO TUBERS (in Russian)
Halves of potato tubers were gamma-irradiated (/sup 137/Cs) at a rate of 700 r/min to total doses of 1 to 50 kr. Eyes were then transferred to unirradiated potatoes and vice versa. The lengths of the sprouts of the host tubers to which the 10-kr irradiated eyes were transplanted were, on the 15th to 20th day, nearly twice those of the controls and the weights were nearly triple, with dry weights 1.5 times as great. In the case of transplant of 50-kr eyes, the host sprouts were only 63% of the controls and weights were only 84%, dry weights about half. Sprouts from unirtadiated eyes transplanted to 10-kr irradiated tubers were seven times as long as the controls, and dry weights, five times as great; those transplanted to 50-kr tubers were half as long and dry weights were slightly lower. Unirradiated eyes transferred to unirradiated tubers, as a second control, were about the same in length and weight as the first controls. The results indicate that the radiation stimulation and depression of growth of the potatoes depends on substances originating throughout the mass of the tuber as a result of the irradiation. In low concentrations these substances stimulate growth of the seedlings, but in high concentration they depress the growth, and in even higher doses completely inaibit growth. The experiments confirm that for stimulation of growth, direct irradintion is not completely necessary, but it is sufficient to irradiate only the parenchyma of the tubers. (TTT)
