EFFECT OF IRRADIATION ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF CVTR PRESSURE TUBE MATERIAL

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4752360
As part of the program to establish the acceptability of extruded Zlrcaloy-4 for the CVTR pressure tube application, representative specimens were irradiated in low temperature process water in WTR to simulated two, three and five year service exposure. Integrated fast fluxes up to approximately 2.5 x 10/ sup 21/ nvt (>1 Mev) were accumulated. The effects of this irradiation were evaluated with respect to tensile properties at room temperature, 300, and 550 deg F; impact properties at room temperature, 200, 300, and 550 deg F; and creep at 550 deg F. Although the exposure conditions were more severe than those reported in other irradiation studies with Zircaloy (lower temperature and higher integrated flux) the property changes were comparable. It is concluded that the irradiation-induced changes in mechanical properties will not introduce any operational hazard to the CVTR pressure tube under anticipated operating conditions. (auth)
